Here's a project that aligns with SAMs Watch efforts.
Development of National Drug Early Warning System
NIDA is pleased to announce the development of a new, enhanced data collection system through a partnership with CESAR and the University of Maryland. The National Drug Early Warning System (NDEWS) will be the first national public health surveillance system with the ability to identify emerging drugs and their metabolites, including a focus on synthetics. NDEWS will establish a system of harmonized community indicators for tracking drug trends and emerging drugs nationally, using both traditional data collection strategies as well as social media and web scans. NDEWS will serve as a coordinating center to generate critically needed information about emerging drug concerns and their public health consequences so that rapid, informed, and effective public health responses can be developed. The five year project began July 2014.
